A Note
From Adam
OK, you got the job. Now what are you going
to do? Camp is an awesome experience. But there are some things
you need to know before you board that plane or load yourself into
that car. You have to be ready to have a very Fun but also extremely
challenging summer. Be prepared for many different types of kids.
Patience is key as a counselor. Kids will test your patience but
it is totally worth it. The campers that come to our camp are such
a great bunch. They are really into computers and love to learn.
We are not their teachers, we are their "Leaders." As a counselor
you will not only have to lead lessons but also help the campers
with their social issues. Do you remember how it felt to not have
someone to sit with at lunch? Well, you will always be on the lookout
to help kids not feel unwanted. This takes a lot of energy. But
trust me, when you see a camper make friends with someone, it is
well worth it.
Training Week is very interesting. Be prepared to learn a ton of
info. We go over everything from "What to Say and What to Not Say"
to CPR testing, to learning about campers learning methods. This
week will be full of meetings and you will be setting up camp as
well. But most of all, this is when you will meet your fellow counselors.
Also, when you need help ASK!!! Don't ever feel like you can't ask
a question. During Training Week you will get a great feel for what
is to come.
The kids Are coming what do you do? Well, we are so prepared here
at Emagination Computer Camps, that it will be like second nature.
We usually do a walkthrough the days before. This is so we are all
calm and know where to go. The tours are really important. Some
of these kids have never been away from home for even a day. So
the parents want to see the campus and you will be their tour guide.
The parents and campers will be asking you tons of questions, so
make sure you know about the campus and try to remember key facts
about the camp.
The first day of Camp for all campers can be kind of hectic. But
don't worry, it won't last. Once all the campers are in their group
and have their workshop schedule, it will be pretty smooth sailing
from there. When you are waiting for the beginning of camp to start,
play games with the kids. Even if its just going around the circle
and having the campers just say their favorite TV show or website.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner? Yes, you will get all your meals. But
when you eat with the kids, you should sit with them. This makes
the campers really feel great. It shows them that you really care
about them. The meals are OK. You will get used to it, we all do
:)
You will have time to explore the area that the camp is by also.
Going around cites that you might never have been to, or have been
to is so cool. Usually another counselor will go with you and it
will always be a fond memory. Also, you will have some nights off
to relax. You will most likely want to rest, but I urge you to go
see and do as much as you can on your days and nights off.
Well, there you go. You will have such a great time. I promise you.
Just always remember that the kids come FIRST! I hope to see you
all this summer.
