Game Design Camp – Overview

Get Inside the Game
At Emagination Game Design Camp teens ages 15 to 18 experience what it’s like to work at today’s top game design studios. Teens learn design principles using industry standard software then join a development team to build a playable 3D console game which they present to an Expert Panel of industry pros on the last day of camp. Guest speakers and a studio tour round out the program.

Two-Week Overnight STEM Program — Weekend Included
The program spans two weeks (13 days, 12 nights) with the weekend included in tuition. There are no prerequisites except for a strong desire to experience the video game development process as it is practiced in the industry today. The program is immersive with campers first learning software and game design principles which are then put to work on a development team to create a playable game — all in two weeks!

There is plenty of time allotted each day to Get Unplugged in outdoor games and swimming. In the evening campers have time for recreation, gaming, working on their game and just hanging out in the dorm with new camp friends.

Fun on the weekends includes outdoor games, gaming tournaments and time to relax with fellow game designers.

Learn the Valuable Skills of Today’s Professionals
Teens learn the key technical and creative components of video game design including level design and function, the creation of 3D characters, lighting, sound effects and programming.
They learn to use industry standard software including 3ds Max © and Maya © from Autodesk; Adobe Photoshop ©; and Unreal Engine 4 from Epic Games.

Join a Development Team
Campers choose their role on a development team. Roles include Level Designer, 3D Animator, Audio Artist, Story Writer, Programmer, and Game Tester (everyone’s a Game Tester!). Campers experience working collaboratively on a team to reach milestones in the design process and the need for teams to meet deadlines teaches time management skills.

Build a Playable 3D Game
Lead Designers (aka the Instructors) oversee development teams as they decide on game elements and use an industry standard Design Document to build a playable 3D game powered by Unreal Engine 4.  Teams work to construct the game world, create 3D characters and animations, select the sound and music, program objects and controls and create the menus

Learn from Guest Speakers
Guest speakers come to campus for Inside Gaming. These industry professionals share design insights and an inside look at working in this $100 billion global industry. It’s interactive with campers having the opportunity to ask questions as they are developing a game.

Tour a Game Design Studio
We tour a local game design studio to see the pros in action. Emagination’s campers have toured Blizzard Entertainment, EA Games, Turbine Studios, Hi-Rez Studios, to name a few.

Expert Panel of Industry Pros
Development teams present their games to a panel of industry pros for critique and awards on the last day of the program. And, everyone receives an Emagination Diploma.

Gaming at Night and Daily Recreation
Of course there’s console and network gaming tournaments at night (its research!) and time each day for games on the field and swimming in the pool. Take part in basketball, kickball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, dodge ball, lightning and, of course swimming. The choice is yours!
